Faculty Institute

  • Designed for new faculty or faculty who have not taught a remote/ online course with a commitment of approximately 8-10 hours across 3 weeks
  • Using a flipped classroom model where some content is delivered asynchronously and completed prior to synchronous sessions and synchronous sessions focus on application and designing a course
  • A CatCourse site packed with resources for online teaching. All faculty should see the course on “Faculty Institute: Building Instructional Resilience” on their CatCourses dashboard (login through https://catcourses.ucmerced.edu/). If you don’t see the course on your dashboard, you can request access here.
  • Offered in late fall for spring instruction, with a flexible schedule and participation – faculty can attend synchronous sessions that best serve their needs

Week 1 – November 30, 2020: Focus on Design

  • Evaluate the strengths adn challenges of creating student-focused, resilient courses.
  • Determine the big ideas to be amplified in your spring course design and and align materials to meet those ideas.
  • Analyze the issues regarding cognitive load, especially in times of crisis, and determine how you will respond when planning for spring.

Tuesday – Thursday, December 1-3

Open session with CETL to provide time for discussion and application of the material in the Faculty Institute Design module (Backward Design Model, Creating Solid Learning Outcomes, Scaffolding Learning with Technology and Reviewing Alternatives for Assessment).

Friday, December 4

CETL will hold optional follow-up sessions to continue or complete application of material and answer questions.

Week 2 – December 7-11, 2020: Focus on Build

  • Demonstrate understanding of synchronous, asynchronous and mixed online modalities.
  • Map your course by week or topic to help students ealily understand adn access weekly assignmtns, quizzes, videos, etc.
  • Identify engagement strategies usng tools aligned with your delivery methods.
  • Evaluate tools and technologies for digital course content using basic video recording and editing software.

  • Create a "to do list" for developing a welcoming and inclusive learning community that reflects best practices.
  • Apply strategies to engage students in active learning and employ strategies to mitigage student resistance to participation.
  • Evaluate the planned assessments and determne appropriate modifications to reflect a variety of assessment types.
