SATAL student partners are undergraduates representing the three schools who have received professional development in classroom observation, interviewing, and reporting techniques. As experienced students, they provide an unbiased outsider's view, and some are pursuing careers in education.
Javier Hernandez
I joined SATAL because I wanted to help bridge the communication gap between students and instructors and create more opportunities for students to have a voice in their education. Through SATAL, I’ve gained experience in data collection, analysis, visualization, and presentation while working closely with instructors to turn student feedback into meaningful changes. As I’ve grown in my role, I’ve contributed to the hiring and training of new interns by developing interview material, participating in interviews and hiring decisions, creating training modules, and leading dozens of new interns through onboarding. What I’ve enjoyed most is helping students become confident within student-faculty partnerships and seeing how their perspectives can make a real difference in the classroom and beyond. My time with SATAL has shaped how I understand teaching, learning, and collaboration, and I’m grateful to have contributed to my community in a way that will last beyond my time here.

Adrian Garcia
I joined SATAL because I wanted to encourage students to feel comfortable giving constructive feedback. I was also drawn to SATAL for the chance to build my Excel skills. There are so many functions I didn't know existed before joining and getting hands-on with real data made learning them feel practical. My hope is that SATAL keeps growing and that we continue pulling in feedback from every direction, so the program stays as responsive and useful as it was designed to be. In my free time, I enjoy going to the gym and coding fun apps.

I joined SATAL because of the emphasis on student training and encouraging the development of skills. I enjoy being closely involved on campus while also working towards the improvement of UC Merced.

Craig Soriano
For me, I joined SATAL mainly because I wanted to contribute to bridging the gap between students and instructors. I feel that communication, while an important aspect towards facilitating change in the first place, is not commonplace enough for students to feel comfortable about providing feedback about their coursework. And so along with my coworkers, I wanted to partake in changing UC Merced's for the better, one class at a time. Apart from that, I wanted to further develop my presentation and data science skills. I felt that SATAL is a great way to boost both my knowledge and confidence in those fields.
